Report abusive activity to DSLExtreme's Network Abuse Department

How to report abusive activity to the Network Abuse Department

DSLExtreme’s new Abuse Response System is now online. In order for us to investigate your spam, fraudulent email, or virus-attachment complaint, we will need to be able to view the original routing information contained in the message’s header. If you need to report port probe/scan activity, hack attempts/inappropriate login activity, DoS attacks, or worm activity, we will need the firewall log showing the suspicious activity details.

Your first step is to send a note to [email protected], stating in the subject line the type of abusive activity you are reporting. The Abuse Response System will automatically assign you an incident number and reply to your email with a link to an Abuse Contact Form page specific to your incident.

The fields on the Abuse Contact Form page are as follows:

Your Name: (your DSLExtreme account name, or just a contact name if you aren’t a DSLExtreme customer)

Phone Number: (the main number you can be reached at if necessary)

Your Email: (this must be the email address you sent the initial note to [email protected] from)

Abuse Type: (the type of abusive activity – virus, spam, port probes/scans or other)

Approx. Time: (approximate time of incident – please include your local time zone)

Offending IP: (the suspect IP address performing the abusive activity – see below for assistance in locating this information)

Additional Information: (the section where the details of the suspicious activity need to be pasted)

If you are sending a spam, fraudulent email or virus-attachment complaint, you will need to extract the message header from the suspicious item, and paste it into this field. Find the email application or interface you’re using below, and follow the instructions to obtain the full message header:

Microsoft Outlook (for Windows) – Right-click once on the suspect message, and select Options. In the dialogue box that appears, left-click once anywhere In the Internet Headers field, and then press Control-A on your keyboard. This will select all the text in the Internet Headers field. Once everything is selected, press Control-C on your keyboard to copy it, left-click once in the Additional Information field on the Abuse Contact Form, and then Control-V to paste it into the Abuse Contact Form. This will paste the header information into your incident report.

Mac Mail – Double-left-click on the suspect message to open it. Pull down the View menu for the message and select either Message or Show, depending on which version of Mail you’re running, and then left-click once on Raw Source. Left-click once in the dialogue that appears and then press Apple-A. Once everything is selected, press Apple-C on your keyboard to copy it. Then left-click once in the Additional Information field on the Abuse Contact Form, and then Control-V to paste it into the Abuse Contact Form. This will paste the header information into your incident report.

Webmail interface Webmail interfaces include DSLExtreme’s webmail for dial-up and DSL:

In Webmail, open the suspect item, and click on the link Actions button > Show Original.
Left-click on the email and hit Control-A (for PC) or Apple-A (for Mac) to select all text.
Press Control-C (for PC) or Apple-C (for Mac) to copy it.
Then left-click once in the Additional Information field on the Abuse Contact Form, and then Control-V (for PC) or Apple-V (for Mac) to paste it into the Abuse Contact Form. This will paste the header information into your incident report.
Other Webmail:
Other email applications will have similar procedures to obtain detailed message header information. If the email application you normally use is not listed here, then let us know what you're using, and we will track down the procedure for you. The message header is critical information required to fully and properly investigate abusive email items (spam, virus-attachments, phishing, etc.). Without the information contained in the header, we will be unable to investigate the complaint.
After you have pasted the header information into the Abuse Contact Form, left-click once on Submit.

If you are sending a port probe/scan activity, hack attempt/inappropriate login activity, DoS attack, or worm activity complaint, simply copy the relevant lines showing the details of the suspicious activity directly from your firewall log, and paste them into the Additional Information: section. Consult your router/firewall manual for assistance with obtaining the logs.

The attack/incident details must include:
The exact date and time of each incident, including the local time zone the report was taken in.

The attacking IP address, including port information.

The victims IP address, including port information.

Any other relevant information related to the type of attack (for example, if the type of attack is an inappropriate login attack,
what usernames were probed).

After you have pasted the attack details from your firewall logs into the Abuse Contact Form, left-click once on Submit.
If you have any further questions or issues, don’t hesitate to call or email us for further assistance.

Thank you.
