Creating a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) Connection for windows 98

How would you like to be able to use your dial-up access even when you're using a different computer? You can, even if the DSLExtreme Dialup software is not installed. All you have to do is to create a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) Connection on the computer.

Tip: Before creating a new DUN, you might want to check to see if a DUN is already installed.

Before you set up a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection, you should check whether one exists on the computer already.
  1. Click the Start button at the left side of your Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs; the Add/Remove Programs Property window will open.
  5. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  6. Click on the word Communications (not the check box before it) to highlight that line.
  7. Click the Details... button further down that window; the Communications window will open.
  8. If there is a check before Dial-Up Networking, then it is installed. If not, then check it and click OK and it will install.
  9. Now you will need to create a Dial-Up Networking connection before connecting to DSLExtreme.

To create a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection on a computer using the Windows 98 operating system:
  1. Double click the My Computer icon on computer’s desktop.
  2. Double click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Double click Make New Connection.
  4. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing field, type DSLExtreme and click Next.
  5. Type your preferred access number. If you do not have one of our numbers, call us at 866-491-7221
  6. Click Next; you will receive confirmation that you have successfully created a new Dial-Up Networking connection called DSLExtreme.
  7. Click Finish; the Make a New Connection window will close and you’ll be back on the Dial-Up Networking screen. You’ll see that DSLExtreme now appears as an option. That’s your new DUN connection to DSLExtreme.

Then follow these steps to complete the set-up of the DSLExtreme connection:
  1. Right-click the DSLExtreme DUN connection you just created; a pop-up menu will display.
  2. Click Properties; a window titled DSLExtreme will open.
  3. Click the Server Types tab.
  4. In the Advanced Options only enable software compression should be checked. In the Allowed Network Protocols area at the bottom of the Server Types tab, only TCP/IP should be checked off. Click the TCP/IP Settings button; a new window will pop up.
  5. Click the circle before Specify name server addresses; a dot will fill the circle and the 4 options in that area will change color to show they can now be accessed.
  6. In the Primary DNS area, replace the zeroes (0s) with this number: 66.51.205.100
  7. In the Secondary DNS area, replace the zeroes (0s) with this number: 66.51.206100
  8. Click OK; the TCP/IP Settings window will close.
  9. Click OK; the DSLExtreme connection window will close and you’ll be back on the computer’s Dial-Up Networking screen.

Finally, to establish a connection to DSLExtreme from that computer:
  1. Double-click on the DSLExtreme connection on the computer’s Dial-Up Networking screen; the Connect To window will open.
  2. Type your DSLExtreme username (e.g. [email protected]) and your password in the fields provided. (Remember that your password is case sensitive.)
  3. Click Connect and wait for the connected conformation window to appear. You’re on!
  4. Now open your browser and your web pages will open
